Description
The Moores Cancer Center (MCC) is one of just 54 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and the only one in San Diego County. As a consortium cancer center, it is a collaborative partnership between the UCSD: encompassing 28 departments, 6 schools (School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, Jacobs School of Engineering, School of Biological Sciences & the School of Physical Sciences), UCSD Health oncology hospitals and clinics; the basic and public health research and outreach of San Diego State University (SDSU), and the basic and translational research of the La Jolla Institute of Immunology (LJI).

The Clinical Trials Office (CTO) at UCSD's Moores Cancer Center administers many clinical trials on behalf of its member investigators, including trials sponsored by National Cancer Institute cooperative groups, pharmaceutical companies, and physician investigators.
Reporting directly to the Clinical Trials Budgeting Manager, the Clinical Trials Budget Analyst provides essential financial support to advance clinical research at Moores Cancer Center. Responsibilities include analyzing, reporting, and modeling the financial aspects of clinical trials to ensure efficient resource deployment and fiscal sustainability. Experience in budget development and negotiating in compliance with UCSD financial guidelines are integral in the success of UCSD's clinical research budgets.
Under general supervision, assist in the development and oversight of budgeting policies and procedures of clinical trials. Assist with the development of oncology clinical trial budgets. Collaborate with clinical trial investigators and research teams to develop and negotiate comprehensive budgets for various oncology clinical trials. Conduct financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making for clinical trial planning and execution. Utilize financial modeling techniques to assess resource allocation scenarios and provide recommendations for optimized trial outcomes. Support document harmonization and identifies opportunities to improve alignment across budgeting documentation and involved departments (e.g., OCTA, OCGA, OCAA, MCC CTO). Perform clinical trial budget updates according to protocol amendments (e.g., additional procedures, treatment arms, etc.). Assist reviewing and analyzing financial performance throughout the clinical trial lifecycle.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training.
  • Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Effective interpersonal skills at all levels within the unit; excellent service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. Ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Experience developing and maintaining record management systems. Experience and ability to accurately collect, record, transcribe and synthesize data.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical programs supporting recording, videotaping, and remote-meeting access, similar to Zoom and MS Teams.
  • Proven knowledge of investigational protocols (various trial products, data gathering, phases and protocol designs). Experience working with FDA regulations, NCI policies and procedures, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines for the conduct of clinical research.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems. Thorough knowledge of financial principles and excellent mathematical, accounting, and analytical skills to perform research and develop and compile data into accurate, concise, and complex reports.
  • Strong administrative experience using standard word processing and data management software programs, including Word and Excel, to develop and prepare reports. Computer proficiency, including working knowledge of various software programs (such as Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, CTMS, Epic, REDCap, etc.) and internet browser applications. Experience in conducting searches on the internet. Ability and willingness to learn new software as needed.
  • Ability to manage project budgets including monitoring expenses, creating, and analyzing projections, auditing fiscal reports, and providing status reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a clinical research environment such as CRO, academic research institution, and/or a research hospital. Experience reading and interpreting clinical trials research protocols. Administrative experience in summarizing protocol reviews, ability to format and edit minutes for the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee.
  • Knowledge of accounting as applied to both University and Medical Center functions. Proven knowledge of medical billing and collections guidelines and procedures.
  • Experience analyzing and drafting clinical trial budgets and negotiating mutually satisfying terms and conditions.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
